Depreciation: the largest cost line, and the one nobody looks at

For a new car kept a few years, the money that leaves quietly through falling value usually exceeds fuel, insurance and servicing combined. This is what moves it.

Why it dominates

Total-cost-of-ownership work across markets and powertrains keeps producing the same ranking for a new car in its first years: depreciation first, then energy, then everything else [10]. It dominates for a mechanical reason — the loss is largest when the car is newest — and for a psychological one: it is not billed. Fuel and insurance arrive as invoices; depreciation arrives once, years later, as a smaller trade-in figure than expected.

The consequence is that the sticker price is a weak guide to ownership cost. Two cars with the same list price and different residual behaviour are different financial propositions, and the cheaper-to-buy one is not reliably the cheaper-to-own one.

What actually moves it

  • Age and mileage, unavoidably — the used-market literature finds both, with age typically the stronger of the two at normal distances [2][4].
  • Generation timing. A model replaced by a visibly better generation loses value on the announcement, not on the delivery. Small EVs have depreciated on battery-generation cycles for exactly this reason.
  • Fleet and rental waves. When a large fleet cohort reaches the used market together, residuals for that model drop regardless of the car's merits. Direct-sales EV brands with heavy early fleet mix have felt this most.
  • List-price policy. A manufacturer cutting new prices reprices every used example overnight — the clearest recent lesson in the EV market.
  • Battery health, for EVs. Buyers and dealers increasingly price a measured state-of-health rather than assuming degradation from age; the used-EV market is developing that signal in real time [3][6].

What it means for how you buy

If depreciation is the largest line and it is front-loaded, three things follow. Keeping a car past the steep part of the curve is the single most effective cost lever available to a private buyer. Financing structures that let you rent the depreciation — PCP, lease — are efficient at low mileage precisely because they price that steep part and hand the residual risk to the lessor. And a nearly-new car bought after the first owner has absorbed the steepest loss is often the best value in the market, provided its condition and, for an EV, its battery health can be verified.

How much does a new car depreciate?
It depends far more on segment, generation timing and market than on the badge, which is why we describe depreciation character on the brand pages rather than quoting a percentage that would be wrong for most readers.
Do electric cars depreciate faster?
Early generations did, and list-price cuts and fleet waves hit some models hard. The used market is now developing a battery state-of-health signal that lets a well-kept EV hold value on its measured condition rather than on folklore about the powertrain.
What is the cheapest way to deal with depreciation?
Keep the car past the steep part of the curve, or buy after someone else has absorbed it. Both beat any financing trick.
