What a car really costs: reading a total-cost-of-ownership number
Nearly every cost comparison you will see is organised around the number that matters least. This is how to read one properly.
The lines, in the order they matter
Total-cost-of-ownership studies of passenger cars, across regions and powertrains, keep landing on the same ordering: depreciation first, then energy or fuel, then insurance and maintenance, then tax and financing cost — with the exact ranking of the middle lines shifting by market and by how long the car is kept [1][2].
Two consequences follow. First, a car that is cheaper to buy but depreciates faster can cost more to own than a dearer one that holds value — which is why the brand pages describe depreciation character rather than list price. Second, for an electric car the energy line splits into home charging and public rapid charging at very different unit costs, so the same car can have a very different second-largest line depending on how it is used.
Why the monthly figure is designed to mislead
Consumer-credit research on car purchases finds that buyers anchor on the monthly payment, and that sellers respond by moving the term rather than the price: a longer term makes the monthly figure smaller while making the total larger [3]. Personal contract purchase and leasing go further, financing only the depreciation rather than the car, which is why they show the lowest monthlies of all — and why they are, over repeated cycles, a subscription to permanent payments.
The financing pages describe every structure by the same three things — how it works, who it suits, and the catch — so that a monthly figure can always be put back into the total it came from.
Why the same car costs different amounts in different countries
Most of the between-country gap is tax architecture. A CO₂-weighted registration tax, a company-car benefit-in-kind regime that favours zero-emission cars, or an annual circulation tax scaled to emissions will each move the ownership cost of one car by more than the manufacturer’s cross-border price differences do. Purchase incentives, by contrast, are the least durable part of the picture: the research is consistent that they move adoption while they last and that their withdrawal moves it back [5] — Sweden’s bonus was removed with days of notice, and the US federal credit ended for purchases after September 2025.
That is why the country pages describe structure — how cars are taxed, how they are customarily financed, which reputable lenders operate — and treat every headline amount as perishable.
The line you still control after signing
Once the car is bought and the finance is signed, depreciation, insurance and the tax regime are largely out of your hands. Energy is not. For an EV, the gap between an off-peak home tariff and a motorway rapid charger is the single largest lever left, and on long journeys it is decided by which chargers you stop at [7].
