Why we treat every incentive as perishable

This site describes tax architecture and names providers, and it refuses to print an incentive amount. Here is why, with the evidence.

What the research says

Work on EV purchase incentives across markets finds them effective at raising adoption during the period they run, with important nuance about structure — who captures the subsidy, whether it is a rebate or a tax credit, whether it flows through dealers or buyers [1]. Country studies from Poland to Indonesia reach the same directional conclusion with different magnitudes [2][6]. What none of that work supports is the idea that an incentive is a stable input to a purchase decision made months later.

The pattern, market by market

  • Sweden abolished its purchase bonus in November 2022 with days of notice — the standing lesson about pricing a subsidy into a decision.
  • Germany ended the Umweltbonus abruptly at the close of 2023 when the budget was struck down.
  • The United States ended the federal clean-vehicle credit for purchases after 30 September 2025 under 2025 legislation, closing the lease pass-through as well; state programmes remain, and vary widely.
  • Italy, Croatia, Portugal run budget-capped rounds that open and exhaust — the pot being empty is the normal state.
  • Norway is deliberately winding down EV advantages as electrification succeeds; what remains is punitive taxation of combustion cars rather than gifts to electric ones.

What to rely on instead

Tax architecture changes far more slowly than incentive amounts, and it usually points the same direction for years: a CO₂-weighted registration tax spares low-emission cars by construction; a company-car regime that favours zero-emission cars is typically set on a multi-year schedule; a circulation tax scaled to emissions persists across budgets. Those are what the country pages describe, and each carries an explicit verify-before-you-buy note for anything a budget cycle could move.

Why don’t you list the incentive amounts?
Because they change on budget cycles and a static number is wrong within a year in most markets. We describe the structure that lasts and tell you what to verify.
Do incentives actually work?
Yes, while they run — the research is consistent on that. They also reverse when withdrawn, which is exactly why they cannot be treated as a stable input to a decision.
