The shape of the cost

The traditional high-mileage choice, still efficient on the motorway, and the powertrain with the most policy risk attached: urban access restrictions and tax treatment have moved against it across Europe. Total-cost studies that compare powertrains find the ranking of the cost lines differs between them more than the total does — which is why the shape below matters more than any single number [1].

Cost-line weights for a new diesel car A bar chart of the relative weight of depreciation, energy, insurance, maintenance, tax and financing cost for a new diesel car over its first years, on an ordinal 1–5 scale. Tax & fees4Depreciation3Energy / fuel3Maintenance3Insurance2Financing cost2
The shape for Diesel. Ranks, not amounts — where diesel is unusual is which bar is tallest and which is shortest, and that pattern is what changes the decision. Ordering consistent with the total-cost-of-ownership literature cited on this page.

Line by line

How each cost line behaves for a diesel car
LineHow it behavesWith more kilometres
DepreciationWeakened by the policy direction; used diesel values in markets with expanding low-emission zones carry a discount that has nothing to do with the car’s condition.falls
EnergyEfficient at sustained speed; the classic long-distance economy case still holds on fuel alone.rises
MaintenanceEmissions after-treatment (particulate filters, AdBlue) adds cost and adds failure modes on short urban trips the system was not designed for.rises

TaxPenalised in a growing number of registration and circulation regimes, and excluded outright from some city centres — a cost that does not appear on any invoice until you cannot drive somewhere.holds

When it wins, when it loses

Defensible only for a genuinely high-mileage motorway driver outside restricted cities, and increasingly hard to justify even there once the residual and access risks are priced.

Diesel at each annual distance

  • 10,000 km a year — Short commutes or a second car; the car spends most of its life parked.
  • 20,000 km a year — The European and US average: a daily commute plus regular longer trips.
  • 30,000 km a year — Long commutes, sales territory, frequent motorway journeys.
  • 60,000 km a year — Professional driving, cross-country work, the car as a place of business.
Is a diesel car cheap to run?
Efficient at sustained speed; the classic long-distance economy case still holds on fuel alone. Emissions after-treatment (particulate filters, AdBlue) adds cost and adds failure modes on short urban trips the system was not designed for.
Does a diesel car hold its value?
Weakened by the policy direction; used diesel values in markets with expanding low-emission zones carry a discount that has nothing to do with the car’s condition.
Who should buy a diesel car?
Defensible only for a genuinely high-mileage motorway driver outside restricted cities, and increasingly hard to justify even there once the residual and access risks are priced.
